Manyu Gao

Born in 1990, Fuxin, Liaoning, China

Currently live and work in Los Angeles, California, United States, and Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China

Manyu Gao is a multimedia artist, who creates game-like works involving painting, sculpture, architecture and interior design elements. The philosophical and cultural thinking of play and game has been the main theme for her work. Her interests in the malleability of space and how the body relates to, inhabits and interacts with it come from her experiences as a former professional basketball player and a model in China. Because she has lived away from home and consistently moved since the age of eleven, her work focuses on interior spaces and fantasies of home, and how multicultural, multiracial environments foster awareness of personal identity. She uses elements in games and her cross-cultural experience to make artworks that are both fun for the “viewers/players” and challenge their assumptions about what play can do in art.
